What is Joomla SEO all about?
Joomla is one of the most widely used content management systems (CMS). The platform is ideal for creating corporate websites, but what about search engine optimization? Here are some Joomla SEO tips to help you significantly improve your website's ranking.
The loading time of the website plays an important role in the Joomla SEO. The page speed is largely determined by the file size of the page content. High-resolution images and videos are appealing to the user, but they are counterproductive in terms of loading time. The size of the JavaScript files is also important for Joomla SEO. The standard caption.js and mootools.js files are usually not needed and can, therefore, be disabled. CSS files can be compressed using extensions such as Jbetolo, reducing page load times to a tolerable level.
Among the most important factors in the Joomla SEO include appropriate meta-titles for each sub-page of the website. The title appears in the search engines in the hit lists and should describe the topic of the page as accurately as possible. The main keywords must be integrated into the titles; therefore, it is essential to choose an individual title for each subpage. Optionally, the name of the domain can be attached. The separation from the rest of the title should be done either by a hyphen or a pipe.
A proper meta description is also very important in Joomla SEO. It describes what the user expects on the page. Depending on the search query, the description will be displayed in the search engines together with the URL and the page title. The length of the description is ideally between 160 and 180 characters. Overlength cuts off the text, so the core statements should always be listed at the beginning of the description. As in the meta title, the most important keywords should also be included in the meta description.
In order to achieve a high search engine position, a meaningful URL is also needed. In the Joomla SEO options the setting "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" can be selected in the configuration menu under "Search engine friendly URL". The system independently generates URLs containing the keywords chosen by the user. It's also possible to set "Use URL rewrite" to "Yes". For this purpose, however, the software module mod_rewrite must be activated in the file .htaccess.
In order to make settings for the Joomla SEO directly on the surface, the version 2.5+ should be used. Users using the older version 1.5 can only rewrite the URL and edit the meta tags. As of version 2.5, functions are offered that make Joomla SEO much easier. For example, the page header can be displayed as an H1 heading so that it becomes visible to the search engines. The page name can be chosen as the page title and it is even possible to set an alias for posts.
