5 Typical SEO Mistakes

Many company owners, especially from the off-line area, only have a very vague idea of how their website is structured and how it is going to be found on the Internet. The result of this is that over 90% of corporate websites have a significant amount of problems with their on-site and off-site optimization, which make a better search engine ranking and, therefore, obtaining a greater number of customers from the Internet much more difficult from the outset.

Here are five of the most common SEO mistakes of midsize corporate websites.

  1. Flash Websites. Expensive and complex Flash websites look good. However, these are catastrophe from the search engine optimization standpoint, because search engines do not process Flash and therefore hold the fancy graphics and pretty visuals are entirely wasted on them, which means that for search engine there is practically no useful content on a purely Flash website. Used economically and with good measure, flash content can be highly effective, however the base structure of a corporate website should be entirely reachable through text links and indexable for search engines.
  2. None or few backlinks. It is nice and swell to have a web presence. However, it must also be found. And that is only possible through external links. Building a variety of qualitative links from websites on similar topics is the foundation of any reasonable SEO campaign.
  3. Missing analytical tools. Do you know how many visitors your website had last week, and from where and through which keywords that visitors have found your site? If not, you're not alone - the vast majority of small and midsize corporate website owners have no analytical tools or no access to them, and therefore have little to no idea of the current website stats - which in turn means that they have only a minimal chance to improve the current situation.
  4. Not using topical directories and meta-search engines. Nowadays, except Google, there are numerous other niche search engines and traffic sources, which are frequently quite easy to access and tap - one must only know of their existence.
  5. No social marketing. In 2011 one can hardly ignore social networks anymore - every modern SEO campaign must in any case involve Facebook and Twitter integration and social marketing. However, social marketing, as of now, is only an integral component of their online marketing strategy for a minority of midsize companies.
